2012 is My Beginning

My name is Joshua Englehaupt. I’m 31 years old and disabled with Cerebral Palsy. I am non-verbal and non-ambulatory. I am an artist.

Being non-verbal, my words are coming to you through my mother, Carol. She is interpreting what I think and feel. I guess 31 years of being a caregiver and parent gives her a unique insight into how I think and feel. Just know that everything typed here is colored by her feelings. She does the best she can under the circumstances.

The Mayan calendar says the world will end in December of 2012. For me, 2012 will be my beginning. My artwork is changing. My body is changing. My goals are flying high. I intend to find my own voice.

I don’t know yet what that voice will be. My mother and I are searching. I will blog on this search as it happens. I am looking for a device that can speak for me. A way to access that device that I can physically handle. A teacher to help me learn how to use it. All these things I hope to find in 2012.

My artwork is changing. I’ve discovered acrylics. The vibrant colors energize me and my work. I’m learning to use different techniques and I’m searching for a way to be a more independent painter. Using more of my own ability and relying less on my mother. This website will document my journey.

I have signed up to work with a personal trainer at Riverside Chiropractic. Abby is willing to work with me to develop stronger muscles. I’m hoping to gain more control over my muscles and perhaps decrease reflexes. This is new territory for me. I haven’t worked on my physical body in over 15 years. I don’t know what will happen but movement feels good. I’m energized by hope. Dreams are good things to have.

I will document this journey as I travel it. I hope it inspires and encourages others to develop their own plan of action.

I intend to have discussions about my work in progress. My works for sale. And my inventory in stock. I am disabled and non-verbal but my life is exciting, busy, and so full of goals and plans. I invite you to share my journey.
